It’s that time of year again! You may be starting to add a new step to your weekend routine: the farmer’s market. Instead of staying indoors and watching cartoons trying to avoid the cold, many (like us!), are getting a jump start on our weekend activities and enjoying family time at our local market. No matter where you are located in the KC Metro area, there is likely to be a Saturday farmer’s market in your neck of the woods. Buying produce at your local market not only helps support local businesses and farmers *cough cough*, but it also allows you to promote sustainability, while eating seasonally fresh products.
Here at Johnson’s we are currently preparing our U-Pick veggie patch and mum harvest for this upcoming fall. In the meantime, we find it beneficial to help our customers out by providing some tips on where and what to be shopping for right now. With all of the rain this year in the Midwest, some products, such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, may be in low supply. Right now (mid-June), be on the lookout for: asparagus, broccoli, beets, cherries, herbs, corn (late June/early July), leafy greens, and mushrooms. In July, you can look forward to: green beans, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, blackberries, and that famous midwestern sweet corn.
The Johnson’s love to grill out, and with the 4th of July quickly approaching, some of the staples for the season are corn, cucumbers, and heirloom tomatoes. If you pick up some farm-fresh steaks, cucumbers, tomatoes, cilantro, parsley, and corn, you’ll be in great shape for steaks with a side of seasonal tomato and cucumber salad, and a chimichurri sauce. So what are you waiting for? Get out there this weekend and support your local farmers, while also feeding your family fresh, seasonal produce. Feel free to share with us on Facebook or Instagram what your farmer’s market haul looks like this week!
